What About Food Allergies?

Allergy Butler is asked all the time if we treat food allergies. The quick answer is no, but our treatments may help some patients with food allergies.

According to the Institute of Food Research, there are many foods that cross-react with pollen. This means that if you eat certain foods, your seasonal allergies could get worse. This also means that some food allergy reactions can get worse during times of high pollen. The American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology says, "This reaction occurs because the proteins found in some fruits and vegetables are very similar to those found in pollen. These proteins can confuse the immune system and cause an allergic reaction or make existing symptoms worse, which is referred to as cross-reactivity."

Common side affects are itchiness or swelling of the mouth, face, lip, tongue and throat after eating fruits or vegetables. Below is a chart of some of the known cross reactions between food and pollen. Some patients food allergies will get better with Immunology. Click here to set an appointment today!
